Augúst Road Race - Montana's Second Oldest Footrace

In the summer of 1965, a small group of seven or eight high school kids paid a 50 cent entry fee to compete in the first annual "City Cross Country Meet." The event was organized by Helena High Cross Country Coach Bill Gilbert, and took place at the "Lamborn Hill Course."

While some things have changed - the location is now at Head Lane, the entry fee is an exorbitant $5, and the event now goes by the moniker "Augúst Road Race, Montana's Second Oldest Footrace" - much has remained the same:

The race still brings together runners of varying ages and abilities, all looking for a late-summer speed check and a friendly contest against each other and the clock. Runners still receive their starting instructions from the legendary Bill Gilbert. The proceeds still support the high school cross country program.

PRELIMINARY RESULTS -- DO NOT CITE OR QUOTE -- REVISIONS TO BE MADE

Highlights:

• Helena High Senior Dan Osborne becomes 3rd high school runner in history to break 20:00!

(the first to do so, Brink Kuchenbrod, traveled from Missoula & witnessed this fine effort)

• Christy Otte-Stergar leads the Vigilante women and captures her first ARR title!

• Thomas Jodoin, on a sub-par day, still leads the Vigilante Men!

• Master runner extraordinaire Peter Dan Sullivan captures 3rd place, in the exact same time he ran

in 2006 to win that year’s race, and 8 seconds faster than his 2003 winning time!

• Elaine Dahl had perhaps the closest finish of the day, summoning a ferocious kick! :)
